BOSTON — Catcher Connor Wong ’s ankle is taped, but he was walking around the Red Sox clubhouse normally before Thursday’s game against the Phillies .
He’s available if the Red Sox need him in a pinch tonight.
Wong left Boston’s 3-1 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday after tripping over Edmundo Sosa’s leg while attempting to catch a pop-up with two outs in the eighth inning. Wong fell to the ground, but reliever Garrett Whitlock hustled to make the catch and record the final out .
“He’s doing much better than we thought, actually,” interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday. “Obviously he’s not playing today, but he’s available if needed. Mostly in an emergency, but he’s available. He’s taped up. He’s got pretty good mobility. Everything with the tendons or the ligaments is fine. So he’s taped up and doing activity now. A little sore.”
Catcher Carlos Narváez will be behind the plate for Thursday’s game, catching for starter Ranger Suarez .
Wong is 12 for 49 (.245) with a .327 on-base percentage, .347 slugging percentage, .674 OPS, five doubles and seven RBIs in 18 games this season.
He has made 16 starts at catcher for Boston. Narváez has started 25 games and Mickey Gasper has made one start behind the plate.
