ATLANTA — Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez left late in Sunday’s blowout loss due to a finger injury but said he feels as though he avoided something serious.
The Red Sox replaced Narváez with Connor Wong during a 33-minute rain delay before the bottom of the sixth inning and announced that Narváez was dealing with “right middle finger pain.” The catcher had X-rays on his hand that were negative and he said he will be day-to-day as the team travels to Kansas City for a three-game series beginning Monday.
“It was a little inflamed,” Narváez said. “I couldn’t grip the ball to throw and catch the next inning like that. It was, ‘Ok, let’s see what that is’ and get an X-ray and stuff.’ They were negative, so it’s not broken.
“It’s gonna be day-to-day. We’ll see how I get tomorrow on the field. As soon as the inflammation goes down, I think we’ll be good. I can squeeze. I can swing. It’s just to grip the ball and throw was a little tough that inning.”

Narváez explained that he first jammed his finger Friday night before being out of the lineup Saturday. On Sunday, when he led off the fifth inning with a single, the issue returned. He described his finger as looking “sideways” at one point during the 8-1 loss.
“From the slide on Friday, when I went down my hand got stuck and went over. I felt something on my finger, it was inflammation a little bit,” he said. “Yesterday, I was a little inflamed but nothing crazy. Today, with the base hit, I hit it off the end of the bat and felt it just jam. When I took off my glove, it was a little sideways.”
Interim manager Chad Tracy said removing Narváez was a precautionary measure in a game the Red Sox trailed 7-0 in the fifth.
“He wanted to continue, but it was a little sore,” Tracy said. “Just felt like it was best to get him out of there with that score and not have him take another swing and maybe make it worse.”
For now, Narváez appears likely to avoid the injured list. The Red Sox are well-equipped to handle any short-term absence with two other catchers — Wong and Mickey Gasper — on the active roster .
“Thank God it’s nothing serious,” Narváez said.
