In the series opener, Woodruff hit Contreras again, marking the sixth time in their careers the right-hander has plunked the Red Sox first baseman . The frequency of these incidents has elevated what would typically be a standard play into a point of scrutiny across the league.
The moment quickly altered the tone of the game. After reaching base, the 33-year-old catcher displayed visible frustration, carrying that intensity onto the basepaths. The Red Sox dugout watched closely as emotions began to rise.
Shortly afterward, Contreras advanced and executed an aggressive slide into second base. Brewers infielder David Hamilton absorbed the contact and appeared shaken following the play, adding another layer to an already tense matchup.
The Talkin' Baseball podcast shared footage of the incident on X, formerly Twitter, showing both the hit-by-pitch and its immediate aftermath.

The incident quickly generated discussion across the league, with the dynamic between Woodruff and the catcher emerging as one of the more unusual pitcher-hitter trends in recent seasons.
The loss drops Boston to 2–8, though Contreras stood out, going 3-for-3 with a single, a solo home run, and an RBI ground-rule double. The Brewers improved to 8–2.
In his first season with Boston, Contreras remains a key presence —but his reaction showcased the intensity of the moment.
