The Red Sox have missed out on some big names this offseason including Alex Bregman . It now appears their plans have shifted to pitching.
The Red Sox are “getting aggressive” in their pursuit of “top-level controllable starting pitching” via the trade market, WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported .
“Names floated as targets are no doubt No. 1 or 2,” Bradford posted to X .
It’s unclear what pitchers are on Boston ’s radar.
After the Red Sox missed out on Bregman, who signed a five-year deal with the Chicago Cubs , industry sources told MassLive’s Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo that the Red Sox were “were at least considering a pivot to focusing on pitching additions as they attempt to make a big-ticket move” because “the thinking is to build a roster focused more on run prevention through pitching.”
The Red Sox have been busy on the trade market all offseason. They acquired Sonny Gray , who will add depth to their starting rotation, and Wilson Contreras , who will give the team more options at first base after not committing to Triston Casas .
Boston has Garrett Crochet as its ace, but does not have a solidified No. 2 starter behind the American League Cy Young runner-up . While not trade candidates, pitchers still on the free agent market Framber Valdez , Ranger Suárez , Zac Gallen , Chris Bassitt , Lucas Giolito and Nick Martinez .
