FORT MYERS, Fla. — Alex Bregman ’s departure to sign a five-year, $175 million contract with the Cubs leaves the Red Sox with a significant leadership void in the clubhouse.
Bregman, who has been to nine straight postseasons , showed his young teammates last year what it takes to win. He also acted as a hitting coach, giving advice to both young players and veterans. As Red Sox special advisor Kyle Boddy has pointed out , leadership is extremely important and unquantifiable when measuring a player’s true value.
Rob Refsnyder , who served as a veteran leader the past four seasons, also is no longer with the Red Sox . He signed with Seattle .
Trevor Story led with Bregman and Refsnyder last year. He remains with Boston after opting in to the remaining two years and $55 million of his contract , and he’ll need to step up even more this year.
“It was tough losing two guys like that,” Story said Friday here at JetBlue Park. “Those guys are great people, great teammates, great players, brought a lot to our team. So we have to figure out a way to make the leadership go around a little bit. And I think some of these guys have to step up.”
Story named a couple of players who he sees stepping up.
“I think based on tenured guys, we’ll look at guys like myself or Chappy ( Aroldis Chapman ),” Story said. “There’s different ways to do it. I think Jarren (Duran) is gonna take a big step in that, as he did last year. So it’s good, man. I guess it’s a good problem to have when you have guys that are coming up and they have to kind of grow into the player and the leader that you expect them to be.”
Story has shown leadership qualities throughout his tenure with the Red Sox after signing before the 2022 season. But it’s difficult for a player to lead when he’s injured. Story appeared in just 69 games combined in 2023-24.
That said, he remained healthy throughout the 2025 season, appearing in 157 games.
“I’ve always felt comfortable (leading), but it just means more and it matters more when you’re out there healthy, playing and you can post with the guys,” Story said. “That’s the main thing. It’s tough to do it from the sidelines when you’re hurt or injured. So I think it may just carry a little bit more weight now.”
