Red Sox DH/outfielder Masataka Yoshida belted a 387-foot home run to help Japan beat Korea 8-6 in a WBC pool play game Saturday.
Yoshida’s solo blast to right field put Japan ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning. He also stroked a two-run single in the seventh inning that made it 8-5 Japan.
Yoshida is 4-for-7 with one home run, four RBIs, three runs and one walk in two WBC games.
Yoshida holds the record for most RBIs in a single World Baseball Classic with 13 . He set it in 2023 when he went 9-for-22 (.409) with two home runs, one double, four walks, one strikeout and five runs in seven games during Japan’s 2023 title run.
He’s currently on a 14 RBI pace if Japan can advance as far as it did three years ago.
Korea gave Japan a challenge, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after a half inning and outhitting Japan, 9-7. The game was tied 5-5 entering the seventh inning.
But Japan took care of business with two home runs from Cubs’ Seiya Suzuki and a home run each from Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani and Yoshida.
All three players homered in a three-run third inning that put Japan ahead 5-3.
Ohtani’s home run traveled 408 feet and left his bat at 110.8 mph.
