Boston Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy absolutely has the right idea in using an opener for starting pitcher Brayan Bello . Nobody knows what it is, but for some reason, there is a clear distinction in Bello's numbers in the first inning compared to his effectiveness later in the game.
Tracy went away from the opener last week, and Bello allowed seven runs after a tough first inning.
On Saturday, Tracy re-implemented the "opener." He once again elected to give the ball to Jovani Moran .
Moran has been the opener in all three instances in which Bello has come out of the bullpen.
The first time Moran was featured, the first batter of the game put a ball in the bleachers, and the Red Sox gave up two first-inning runs.
The second time Moran started, the second batter of the game put a ball in the bleachers, and the Red Sox went down 1-0.
Saturday was Moran's third start. Continuing the trend, Moran surrendered a run to the third batter of the game, and the Red Sox immediately trailed by two before Bello had a chance to take the mound.
Moran has been absolutely shut down when coming out of the bullpen in the month of May. The left-hander has not allowed a single run in any of his other appearances.
Tracy and the Red Sox have the right idea using an opener, but clearly, they need to do some tinkering when deciding who to give the ball to in the first inning.
