BOSTON — The White Sox returned 22-year-old right-handed pitching prospect Jedixson Paez to the Red Sox on Saturday.
Boston will assign him to Double-A Portland after reacquiring him in exchange for $50,000.
Chicago selected Paez with the second overall pick in December's Rule 5 Draft. The Rule 5 Draft rules required him to remain on the White Sox' active roster for the entire season or be designated for assignment.
He was designated on Wednesday after struggling in three outings for Chicago. He gave up six runs, four hits (two homers) and three walks in three innings. He didn't record any strikeouts.
It's not a huge surprise that the White Sox gave up on him so quickly. He has a lot of talent and potential but he had never pitched above High-A before making his major league debut March 26 against the Brewers in Milwaukee .
It would have been difficult for the White Sox to carry such a young pitcher with a lot of development remaining on their active roster for an entire season.
MLB Pipeline had Paez ranked Boston's No. 18 prospect after last season.
The Venezuela native spent 2025 at High-A Greenville, where he missed more than three months with a right calf strain. He finished with a 2.79 ERA and recorded 23 strikeouts in 19 ⅓ innings. In 2024, Paez had a 3.17 ERA in 96 ⅔ innings between Single-A Salem and Greenville.
His command has been a strength. He has walked just 49 batters in 307 ⅔ innings in the minors (1.4 walks per nine innings). He has a 24.6% strikeout percentage compared to a 3.9% walk percentage in the minors.
