HOUSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ’ 9-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Tuesday at Daikin Park:
1. Boston dropped to 1-4, the same record it had five games into the 2025 season. Houston improved to 4-2. Boston has been outscored 17-3 in two games this series and has lost four games in a row.
2. Red Sox starter Brayan Bello dominated over his final two Grapefruit League starts, striking out 14 in 11 scoreless innings. That momentum vanished Tuesday night.
The 26-year-old allowed six runs (five earned), eight hits and three walks while striking out just two. He gave up four extra-base hits, including a 399-foot home run to Yordan Álvarez .
Despite his rough outing, he did induce 18 swings and misses: seven with his cutter, five with his sinker, three with his changeup and one each with his curveball, sweeper and four-seam fastball.
3.It appears everyone missed strike three to Cam Smith with two outs in the fifth inning. Bello was ahead 0-2 in the count and got Smith to swing and miss . But home plate umpire Mark Wegner and everyone else must have thought it was only strike two. Nobody argued and Smith eventually walked on nine pitches and Bello was removed after 4 ⅔ innings.
4. Connor Wong is off to a nice start after batting .190 in 188 plate appearances last year. He cut Boston’s deficit to 3-1 in the fifth inning with a line-drive RBI double to center field. He’s 3-for-7 in two games.
5.All nine pitches Roman Anthony saw in his first three at-bats were strikes, resulting in three-pitch strikeouts each time.
Anthony punched out on three called strikes to open the game. He struck out swinging on three pitches in the top of the third inning. He also struck out swinging on three pitches to open the sixth inning.
The 21-year-old struck out on five pitches in his fourth at-bat in the eighth inning.
6. Ceddanne Rafaela cut the deficit to 11-3 in the eighth inning with his first home run of the season. He hit it 337 feet the opposite way to right field.
7.The Red Sox offense struggled again, managing just one hit in six innings against Astros starter Hunter Brown . Boston recorded just four hits and struck out 13 times.
8.Red Sox rookie reliever Ryan Watson replaced Bello and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out two in 1 ⅓ innings. Lefty reliever Jovani Morán gave up one run on a solo homer in two innings.
9.The Red Sox and Astros will play the final game of their three-game series Wednesday at 2:10 p.m. ET. Ace Garrett Crochet (1-0, 0.00 ERA) starts for Boston opposite Astros righty Mike Burrows (0-1, 7.94 ERA).
