BOSTON — Instant reactions as the Red Sox (4-8) finish an up-and-down homestand with a win, shutting the Brewers out, 5-0, behind a very strong outing by Sonny Gray :
1) For the second straight outing, Gray looked the part of a true running mate to ace Garrett Crochet . Five days after shutting down a potent Padres offense, Gray was even better against Milwaukee , holding the Brewers to three hits in 6 ⅓ shutout innings.
A somewhat sparse Fenway crowd (28,660) gave Gray a nice hand as he walked off after his 90th and final pitch in the seventh. He responded by tipping his cap.
An efficient Gray struck out two and walked two.
2)All week, Alex Cora has preached the importance of small victories, including winning series. For the first time in four tries, the 2026 Red Sox did just that, winning two of three against a good Brewers team after dropping the opener Monday.
The good feelings will linger through the night, when the club flies to St. Louis , and carry past Thursday’s off day before play resumes Friday night.
3)Boston beat Milwaukee at its own game by reaping the benefits of putting the ball in play in the third, scoring three runs. After Ceddanne Rafaela singled, Isiah Kiner-Falefa reached on a well-placed bunt hit. The runners advanced into scoring position before a wild Shane Drohan walked Andruw Monasterio to load the bases, then Willson Contreras to force in a run. From there, Wilyer Abreu ’s RBI infield single made it 2-0 and a Trevor Story sacrifice fly plated Boston’s third run. Behind Gray, that was enough.
A pair of insurance runs came in the seventh when Contreras, Abreu, Story (RBI) and Caleb Durbin (RBI) all singled off Jake Woodford . Four of the club’s seven total hits (all singles) came in that inning.
4)Lefty Tyler Samaniego made his major league debut with a five-run cushion in the eighth and struck out the side, working around a walk to mow down Sal Frelick , Christian Yelich and pinch-hitter Luis Matos . It was a strong showing for the 26-year-old, whose day began in Worcester before he was called up to take the place of injured righty Justin Slaten .
5)Drohan, the longtime Red Sox prospect who made his major league debut for Milwaukee, was wild and ineffective from the beginning. In total, just 28 of his 63 pitches (44.4%) were strikes, and he walked four. It was a forgettable first big league start for the southpaw.
Boston’s lineup worked seven total walks. Monasterio led the way with three.
6)For just the third time in six tries, Greg Weissert held the opponent scoreless. He entered in relief of Gray and got two strikeouts to close out the seventh, stranding two. On a 3-2 count to Joey Ortiz , Weissert landed a sinker over the plate that was mistakenly called ball four. A successful ABS challenge by Carlos Narváez ended the inning.
7)On a sunny day with zero clouds in the sky, outfielders battled the sun — and won. Both Roman Anthony and Ceddanne Rafaela had multiple tricky fly balls and handled them without issue behind Gray.
8)The Red Sox will fly to St. Louis late Wednesday and have Thursday off before beginning yet another interleague series Friday night at Busch Stadium. Here’s the schedule for the weekend:
Friday, 8:15 p.m. ET (NESN) — LHP Connelly Early (0-0, 2.89 ERA) vs. RHP Dustin May (0-2, 15.95 ERA)
