DUNEDIN, Florida — The Toronto Blue Jays will open the season without right-handed pitcher Trey Yesavage , who will begin the year on the injured list because of shoulder impingement.
Manager John Schneider said Thursday that the 22-year-old reported to spring training with the injury, which has slowed his preparation for the season.
“It’s something that he reported to camp with and obviously led to his slow build-up as well,” Schneider told reporters. “Right now, (he’s) feeling good. He’s in a better place now to kind of continue to ramp up, so he’s going to kind of continue on the program he’s been on.”
Schneider said there is no definitive timeline for Yesavage’s return.
The injury marks another blow to the rotation of the reigning American League champions. On Wednesday, Schneider announced that right-hander José Berríos would miss opening day because of a stress fracture in his right elbow.
Yesavage made his big league debut Sept. 15 and posted a 1-0 record with a 3.21 ERA in three regular-season games before becoming a key contributor during Toronto’s playoff run. He went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six postseason appearances, including five starts, striking out 39 batters in 27 2/3 innings.
His postseason highlights included an 11-strikeout performance against the New York Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Division Series, when he allowed one walk and no hits in 5 1/3 innings of Toronto’s 13-7 victory. In Game 5 of the World Series, he struck out 12 and allowed three hits and one run over seven innings as the Blue Jays beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1. He also pitched in relief during Game 7, surrendering Max Muncy’s eighth-inning solo homer that cut the Dodgers’ deficit to 4-3 before Los Angeles won in 11 innings.
Yesavage retains his rookie status entering this season.
