Aaron Boone was a bit surprised to hear one of his former players say the Yankees were thought to be the easier matchup for the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2025 American League Division Series.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa , now with the Red Sox , said Toronto was happy to see Boston lose in the AL Wild Card because the Blue Jays didn’t want to face Garrett Crochet .
“I guess he was right,” Boone told reporters Wednesday . “Little surprising to hear IKF say that. But whatever, that’s fine.”
Boone added he wasn’t bothered by what the ex- Yankees player said.
“You gotta play who you play,” Boone said . “Whatever.”
The Blue Jays ended up defeating the Yankees en route to a World Series appearance against the Los Angeles Dodgers , where Toronto ultimately lost in seven games.
There’s no telling whether the Blue Jays would have struggled against the Red Sox had they defeated the Yankees. But Toronto had just seen Crochet prior to the postseason, and knew what he was capable of.
“We definitely felt like it was a tougher matchup for us,” Kiner-Falefa said of the Red Sox . “So, once we saw the other team (win), we were a lot happier. It was definitely a topic.”
