Red Sox hitters have heard the naysayers.
Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow added Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray to Boston ’s starting rotation this offseason, but the lineup is short a pair of heavy hitters that were in Fort Myers together last spring.
With Rafael Devers jettisoned to San Francisco and Alex Bregman sporting a Chicago Cubs jersey, the Red Sox haven’t replaced the All-Stars with one-for-one swaps. There were no signings of high-profile hitters like Pete Alonso , Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette . Instead, Breslow traded for Willson Contreras and Caleb Durbin and signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
So will Boston be able to score enough runs?
On WEEI’s Greg Hill Show , outfielder Roman Anthony said the Red Sox have heard those questions and laughed them off.
“Honestly, we’ve heard that a little bit in the clubhouse and we kinda joke about it,” Anthony said, “because I think we have a lot more of a complete lineup than people think. I think the additions we added were exactly what we needed. Talk about adding Durbin, guys who just put the ball in play, IKF. Things like that to just help our lineup to be a more complete lineup: Put the ball in play more, whiff a little bit less. I think that’s going to be huge for us.”
At FanGraphs, the Red Sox are projected to score 4.55 runs per game. It’s the 10th most in the majors, but fourth in the AL East, trailing Baltimore , New York and Toronto .
Regardless, Anthony has faith in his guys.
“We’ve got a great lineup down there,” Anthony said. “We believe in ourselves. We know what we stand for. We know what we’re trying to do every single day and we know what the end goal is ultimately. So we’re not too worried about what anyone thinks of our lineup. We know what we’ve got. We know how it’s going to mesh together. It’s been fun to watch so far during the spring and just seeing how we mesh with each other from 1 to 9. So it’s going to be an exciting lineup.”
One of the most exciting individuals in the lineup, Anthony was limited to 71 games as a rookie, but hit .292 with 8 home runs, 32 RBIs while posting an .859 OPS. He said he’s hopeful he can homer 30 times if he’s able to stay healthy this season.
