Boston’s top pitching prospect struggled Sunday as he made his season-debut with the Worcester Red Sox .
Payton Tolle gave up six runs — four earned — on five hits, two walks and six strikeouts over four innings of work.
While the WooSox made a comeback in the middle innings, the Syracuse Mets came away with the 10-8 win at Polar Park.
The 23-year-old lefty threw 71 pitches Sunday, 47 of which were strikes.
Tolle moved his way through the first inning swiftly, striking out the first two batters before forcing a grounder back to the mound to end the frame.
He walked Jose Rojas to open the second inning, though, and gave up a one-out single to center to Ji Hwan Bae to put runners on first and second.
Hayden Senger then doubled to center to drive in two runs.
Tolle got out of the inning with a strikeout, but he once again started the third by walking the lead-off batter.
By the end of the inning, Syracuse had stolen five bases (two double steals), had three singles, a sacrifice fly and four runs across the plate. Two of those runs were not charged to Tolle after an error by Nate Eaton on the sacrifice fly.
Tolle finished his day with a quick fourth inning, with two pop outs and a strikeout to end his day.
