The Boston Red Sox announced a couple of roster decision prior to the series finale of their three-game series against the Washington Nationals .
The team announced on Wednesday morning that they have designated right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle for assignment.
The 36-year-old has struggled in his first year in Boston to start the season. He was brought up to the major league team to start June, but quickly showed his age.
In eight appearances this season, Kahnle holds a 8.00 ERA with five strikeouts in nine innings pitched.
Kahnle has pitched well in his 12 big league seasons, posting a career 3.70 ERA through 445 2/3 innings with 507 strikeouts.
Kahnle was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for the Red Sox's new trade acquisition, Brett Harris .
Harris is a 28-year-old infielder who has played in six minor league season.
He has played three short stints in the major leagues, all with the Athletics . Harris is slashing .194/.307/.289, good for a .596 OPS, with three home runs, 17 RBIs and eight doubles in 73 games with the A's.
Despite a tough showing under the bright lights, Harris is crushing it in the minor leagues this season. In 37 games, Harris holds a .336/.441/.537/.978 slash line with five home runs, 34 RBIs and 13 doubles.
If Harris is given another shot and is able to translate those stats into the big leagues, he could be a huge boost for Boston's offense and an exciting story. Boston holds the 27th worst OPS in baseball with a .693 OPS.
Boston heads to the west-coast to begin a nine-game road trip on Friday.
