The Red Sox have “expressed interest” in Houston Astros third baseman/first baseman Isaac Paredes , The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported .
The 26-year-old Paredes, a right-handed hitter, started 88 games at third base and 13 games at DH for Houston in 2025. He batted .254 with a .352 on-base percentage, .458 slugging percentage, .809 OPS, 20 home runs, 15 doubles and one triple in 438 plate appearances. He also had 53 RBIs, 53 runs, 50 walks and 76 strikeouts.
He doesn’t hit free agency until after the 2027 season.
Rosenthal wrote, “He presumably would play first base for the Sox if (Alex) Bregman returned at third, and the price for him likely would be steep. The Astros, seeking controllable starting pitchers, are interested in one of the Red Sox ’s two young lefties, Payton Tolle or Connelly Early.”
In his career, Paredes has made 399 starts at third base, 53 starts at second base, 40 starts at first base and five starts at shortstop. His range and arm strength at third base are below average. He had zero defensive runs saved in his 121 innings at first base in 2024.
Paredes has played for four teams — the Tigers, Rays , Cubs and Astros — in six seasons. His best season came in 2023 with the Rays when he smashed 30 homers and posted an .840 OPS in 143 games.
He has a career .237/.337/.429/.766 slash line and has hit 19 or more home runs in four straight seasons.
Baseball America ranks Tolle as Boston ’s No. 1 prospect and Early as the No. 3 prospect.
Tolle, who turned 23 in November, has an elite fastball and is working to improve his secondary pitches , especially his changeup, this offseason. The 23-year-old Early, who started Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium after a late-season promotion, has spent this offseason adding more weight and muscle.
