It’s been a rough year for the Boston Red Sox , as the club is in last place in the AL East right now with an 18-26 record. To make matters worse, the team is going to be without Trevor Story in the lineup for some time, as he was placed on the injury list on Saturday.
Reports indicate that the 33-year-old shortstop is dealing with a groin injury , and has been since late April, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Story had been playing through the pain, but it seems he now needs time to fully recover from the injury.
“ Trevor Story to IL,” reported Cotillo. “Been battling a groin issue since late April in BAL.”
With the 11-year veteran out of the lineup, the Red Sox are likely to turn to Isiah Kiner-Falefa to play shortstop. Andruw Monasterio could also see some opportunities at the six as well. Interim manager Chad Tracy has not yet named a starter, as the lineup for Saturday’s game vs. the Atlanta Braves has not been announced as of this publishing.
Time away from baseball to focus on recovering from the groin injury might just be what Trevor Story needs to right the ship this season. Similar to the rest of his Red Sox teammates , Story has been a bit cold at the plate. He enters the IL with 34 hits, three home runs, and 19 RBIs through 165 at-bats, giving him a .206 batting average and .244 OBP.
Those are quite a bit below his career averages (.262 batting average, .325 OBP). Luckily for Story and the Red Sox, there is still some time for him, along with his teammates, to turn things around and compete in the AL East. But that turnaround needs to happen relatively soon.
