BOSTON — A new week has brought a new setback on Triston Casas ' long road to returning to the Red Sox .
Casas, who had his rehab from knee surgery interrupted by an intercostal (rib muscle) strain on his left side last week , is due to have imaging on his midsection after experiencing discomfort while trying to hit off a tee Monday, manager Alex Cora said. The Red Sox are awaiting more information.
"Casas tried to swing. It didn't go well," Cora said. "He's going to go for imaging this week. I don't know when. That's where we're at."
Casas ruptured the patellar tendon in his left knee on May 2 and missed the rest of the season after surgery. He progressed well during the offseason and participated in baseball activities, including batting practice and intrasquad at-bats, throughout spring training. When the team left Fort Myers to start the season, Casas stayed back in hopes of playing in extended spring games in early April. That was the plan before he was shut down from hitting last week.
The Sox hoped a few days without swinging a bat would help Casas, who tore cartilage in his rib cage on a hard swing in Pittsburgh in April 2024 and missed 63 games that year as a result. Instead, the pain lingered enough for imaging to be required.
Casas has appeared in just 92 games since the start of 2024, causing the Red Sox to acquire first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade this winter.
Sandoval on tap for Wednesday; Crawford not far behind
Left-hander Patrick Sandoval (elbow surgery recovery) remains on track to make his first rehab start Wednesday for Triple-A Worcester against Columbus. It'll be his first game action since injuring his arm in a start for the Angels in June 2024.
Sandoval's scheduled start Sunday for Double-A Portland was rained out, causing him to be pushed back a couple days.
Righty Kutter Crawford (right wrist surgery recovery) is not far behind. He'll throw a bullpen at Fenway Park on Wednesday, and if all goes well, make his first rehab start for the WooSox on Saturday at Polar Park . Crawford, like Sandoval, missed all of 2025 with unrelated knee and wrist issues.
Expect Sandoval and Crawford to both pitch multiple times in the minors before being considered for the major league roster.
Sox awaiting word on Oviedo
The Red Sox have not yet received word on the status of righty Johan Oviedo , who is visiting orthopedic surgeon Dr. Keith Meister in Texas on Tuesday. The plan is for Meister to compare the recent MRIs of Oviedo, who is sidelined with a right elbow strain, to imaging done in the fall of 2023, when he underwent Tommy John surgery.
The club will know more in the coming days.
