As the Cincinnati Reds are dealing with injury scares, like most recently due to their star player, Elly De La Cruz , the team gets more bad news, dealing with pitcher Chase Burns . With the Reds coming off the series finale against the Atlanta Braves and starting a new slate of games against the Kansas City Royals , Burns won't be able to make his scheduled start on Monday.
While Burns was set to pitch for Monday night's game, the team announced that he has been scratched due to an illness , with Lyon Richardson being the new starter.
"Reds RHP Chase Burns has been scratched from his start tonight due to illness. RHP Lyon Richardson will be tonight's SP," the team announced on X, formerly Twitter.
There is no word on whether the illness is severe enough for Burns to miss more time than just the start on Monday, or if it is just a minor issue that will be resolved by his next start.
The Reds are dealing with another major absence besides Chase Burns
This season for the Reds, Burns has been a standout, recording a 1.96 ERA (fifth in the majors) with 72 strikeouts and a 7-1 record in 11 appearances. The 23-year-old pitcher for Cincinnati looks to bring more of an impact to the team, especially as the ball club's top star, Cruz, will be placed on the 10-day injured list, which was also announced by the team on Monday.
"Placed on the 10-day injured list: IF Elly De La Cruz (right hamstring strain), Recalled from Triple-A Louisville: IF Edwin Arroyo , Designated for assignment: RHP Yunior Marte , Selected from Triple-A Louisville the contract of LHP Brandon Leibrandt ," the team posted to X on Monday.
At any rate, the Reds are currently 30-28, which puts them last in the NL Central as it remains to be seen if Burns makes his next scheduled start on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals . In the meantime, Cincinnati hopes Richardson could fill in nicely to start the series against the Royals, though he is more of a reliever and could be a by-committee approach for the contest.
