Cincinnati Reds infielder Sal Stewart had been red hot to start his 2026 campaign . However, he cooled down considerably over his last week of play.
Stewart had to take matters into his own hands. Alongside his work in the batter's box, the infielder is hoping changing some superstitions fixes his fortune , via the MLB Network.
"My standards are through the roof," Stewart said. "I don't feel like I played up to my caliber toward the end of the month. The way I've been going as of late isn't who I am. I got to get back to the drawing board and get back to doing what I do."
"Something man, I was over there searching for a hit," he said about shaving. "Just give me one knock."
Over his last seven games, Stewart is hitting .107 with no counting stats and five strikeouts. Those numbers look completely different than what the infielder put up to win NL Rookie of the Month. Over 31 games in March/April, Stewart hit .281 with nine home runs, 29 RBIs and seven stolen bases.
Even with his late April slump, Stewart still leads the Reds in RBIs and ranks behind just Elly De La Cruz in home runs and stolen bases. Still just 22-years-old, Cincinnati is confident the infielder will be able to re-find his footing .
Ultimately though, Stewart knows that's up to him. He's willing to put in the work, beyond just shaving his facial hair, to return to his previous glory. If Stewart's first month looks anything what his future will be like, the Reds will be in good shape for the foreseeable future.
