- Remembering Comerica Park: Miguel Cabrera’s Home Run in the Snow
(USA TODAY Sports)
Soon, Comerica Park will be a thing of the past.
The Tigers organization is set to change the name of the ballpark it has called home for the past 25 years. The stadium itself will remain the same, with the same views from behind home plate and the same memories living inside its walls, but the name will become another chapter in Detroit Tigers history.

Before we get there, though, we can't let a stadium name that lived and grew with me — and so many others — simply fade into the dark without remembering some of the best moments that happened there.
This series will continue throughout the offseason as we look back at some of the most memorable moments from Comerica Park. Make sure to share your favorite Comerica Park memories in the comments, no matter how big or small. Every memory deserves to be remembered.
Today, I want to go back to an Opening Day that was just five years ago.
April 1, 2021.
The day was cold.
A winter hat, winter coat, gloves, scarf, snow pants and snow boots covered nearly every inch of my body. It was a tradition known to many — a tradition that should probably be marked as a holiday itself: Detroit Tigers Opening Day.

The weather was below freezing, but that didn't stop Tigers fans from uniting, drinking, screaming and exaggerating their excitement for the upcoming season.
And on April 1, there were World Series hopes.
Snow began coming down on the couple thousand people brave enough to leave the tailgates and bars of downtown Detroit and actually sit inside an open-air baseball stadium in freezing temperatures rather than find a warm bar with a heater.
For those who made the trek through the frozen tundra and into Comerica Park, they were rewarded very quickly.
The game started.
So did the snow.
And this wasn't a light little dusting.

Absolutely not.
Heavy chunks of frozen precipitation came crashing down on the players, creating a scene straight out of an NFL playoff game. A whiteout descended on Opening Day at Comerica Park, so much so that trying to track a white baseball through the snow felt like trying to spot a real-life alien.
But one man stood above the rest.
One man was locked in on that baseball.
His name was Miguel Cabrera.
Maybe it was a lucky swing. Maybe he knew exactly what he was doing all along.
Regardless, the outcome remained the same.
Cabrera connected with the baseball despite the blizzard surrounding him. Through the wall of snowflakes, the ball traveled toward right field.

I was sitting on the first-base side and tried to track it, but I quickly lost it among the billions of snowflakes surrounding the ball.
I watched the right fielder jump, but I couldn't tell whether the ball had gone over the fence.
Apparently, neither could Cabrera.
The Tigers legend slid into second base without knowing what had happened to his baseball.
Then came the realization.
It carried with the wind and somehow sailed over the fence for a two-run Tigers lead.
Detroit's center fielder Jacoby Jones added another run, and the Tigers ultimately defeated the Cleveland Indians, 3-2, on Opening Day.

The season certainly didn't finish the way Detroit had hoped.
But that Opening Day couldn't have been much better.
The image of Cabrera smiling ear-to-ear after realizing the ball had actually gone over the fence, paired with the memory of sitting in a blizzard dressed like I was preparing to go sledding while cheering and double-fisting two beers, is something that will never pass or fade.
Not even when the name of the stadium changes.
Some memories are bigger than the sign outside.
And Miguel Cabrera's home run in the snow will always be one of mine.
