The Kansas City Chiefs ' offensive coaching staff overhaul continues with the reported hiring of a former star player to help fix their running game.
According to a report from NFL Insider Jordan Schultz , the Chiefs are hiring former NFL running back DeMarco Murray , who has been coaching at the University of Oklahoma as running backs coach since 2020. The 38-year-old will be entering his first season as an NFL coach.
Murray retired from the NFL after seven years, accumulating 7,174 career rushing yards and 49 career rushing touchdowns. He earned three Pro Bowl seasons and, in 2014, was named Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year while with the Dallas Cowboys .
Kansas City's running game lacked explosiveness in 2025 for various reasons, leading to the dismissal of coach Todd Pinkson. Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco led the team in rushing, with Hunt finishing with 611 yards and Pacheco with 462 yards. Rookie running back Brashard Smith contributed with 151 yards on the ground but proved to be a versatile threat in the passing game.
