Report: Eagles release E.J. Jenkins, setting up possible Zach Ertz promotion originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
The Eagles are releasing veteran tight end E.J. Jenkins, who has spent parts of the last four seasons with the Eagles, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.
Jenkins initially joined the Eagles on the practice squad late in the 2023 season and has been on and off the 53-man roster and practice squad several times since.
He was on the active roster when the Eagles beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX two years ago, playing six snaps on offense and 19 on special teams in the 40-22 win in New Orleans.
Jenkins has played 173 snaps on offense in 16 regular-season games with the Eagles and 248 on special teams. He's played 67 offensive snaps this year and 126 on special teams, 2nd-most on the team behind Kelee Ringo's 140.
Jenkins had one catch as an Eagle, a seven-yard touchdown reception from Tanner McKee against the Giants on the last day of the 2023 season.
Jenkins' release leaves the Eagles with only Dallas Goedert and Johnny Mundt on the active roster roster at tight end.
Zach Ertz is on the practice squad and rookie 2nd-round pick Eli Stowers is on Injured Reserve but with his practice window open. Both are candidates to join the 53-man roster. The Eagles would need to sign Ertz to the 53 and they would need to activate Stowers from IR to get him onto the 53.
Ertz has 582 catches as an Eagle, seven shy of the franchise record of 589 set by Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael from 1971 through 1983. Ertz has 828 career receptions, 5th-most in NFL history by a tight end.
Stowers is the first Eagles 2nd-round rookie to not get on the field through Week 6 since offensive lineman Bobbie Williams, a 2nd-round pick from Arkansas in 2000. Williams didn't play at all his rookie year.
