Manchester United's summer rebuild is moving into a more focused phase, with the midfield picture becoming clearer as financial discipline shapes decisions at Old Trafford. According to TeamTalk, United have effectively cooled their interest in both Carlos Baleba and Alex Scott, while Fulham 's Sander Berge is emerging as a serious and more attainable option for INEOS.

The direction of travel says plenty about how the club are now operating. United have already added Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos , and the intention remains to complete a broader midfield overhaul after Casemiro 's exit and with Manuel Ugarte expected to miss a significant part of the campaign due to a serious knee injury suffered at the World Cup. The need is obvious, but so is the strategy. This is a recruitment process driven by valuation as much as profile.
There is little doubt that Baleba has admirers inside the club. TeamTalk reports that if budget were no obstacle, he would be the preferred choice to round out the midfield rebuild. The issue is straightforward, Brighton 's demands place him beyond what United currently consider sensible business.
Graeme Bailey explained the thinking clearly: "What I am hearing is they want someone who can really help them defensively." He then added, "In an ideal world they'd just sign Carlos Baleba. They absolutely love his game. Yes, he didn't have his best season, but they still believe he'd be an outstanding fit for Manchester United."

That appreciation has not disappeared, but the numbers have proved prohibitive. Bailey said: "United believe Baleba is worth somewhere around the £50m mark, especially after what they considered an inconsistent campaign. Brighton couldn't disagree more." The gap between those positions appears too large to bridge. The same report states Brighton's price was "well north of £75m and closer to £100m", which places the deal outside United's current thinking.
That is an important marker for the summer. United are still pursuing multiple areas of the squad, and there is little appetite to commit close to £100m on one midfielder when left-back and the forward line also require attention. This looks like a case of admiration being overtaken by realism.
Alex Scott is another player who has been liked internally for some time. His talent is not in question, and Bournemouth 's midfielder fits the age and development curve many clubs seek. But appreciation does not automatically become a deal.
Bailey's assessment was blunt: "They absolutely love Alex Scott, but his decision to reject Bournemouth's new contract doesn't suddenly make him easier to sign." He continued, "If anything, Bournemouth's valuation is enormous and well beyond what United believe represents fair value."

That language matters. When a club consistently circles back to fair value, it reflects a broader internal policy rather than hesitation over a single player. United's recruitment team, led by Jason Wilcox, appear determined to avoid being dragged into inflated negotiations, even for players they genuinely admire.
Elsewhere, Manu Kone remains on the shortlist, though there is caution over cost there too. Bailey said, "Kone is another player they like a lot and, as TEAMtalk revealed earlier in July, they've been doing a huge amount of work on him in recent weeks." Yet the follow-up is equally significant, "His asking price is around the £50m mark, perhaps a little lower, but even then there are still some inside Old Trafford who aren't totally convinced at that valuation."
Then there is Eduardo Camavinga, perhaps the most intriguing name in the piece. Bailey revealed: "Everyone knows they loved Aurelien Tchouameni, but that was always more of a dream signing than a realistic one." He added, "Camavinga has now been offered to them and I'd definitely keep an eye on that one. He wouldn't come cheap either, but there's no doubt he's a top-class player."
Camavinga would represent a major opportunity if conditions aligned, though the wording suggests this is one to monitor rather than one close to advancing. He is elite, versatile and proven at the highest level, but the financial package would still need to make sense.
Of the names mentioned, Berge feels like the one most in tune with where United are. He has Premier League experience, physical presence, tactical understanding and a fee that appears manageable. TeamTalk's reporting places him below £40m, a level that instantly gives the move a different complexion.
Bailey explained why he keeps resurfacing: "Experience is something they value and that's why Berge keeps coming up." He also said, "He's proven in the Premier League, he'd probably cost under £40m and he showed again at the World Cup with Norway that when he's surrounded by top-quality players he can elevate his game." The conclusion from inside the club is clear, "He's someone United genuinely believe could come in and do a very good job."

That might not carry the glamour of some other names, but this is where smart recruitment often lives. Berge is not a headline-only target. He is a practical one. He addresses a specific need, allows funds to be preserved for other positions and would arrive with fewer adaptation concerns than a player coming in from a very different league profile.
For INEOS, this may be exactly the type of calculation they want to be seen making. The market can tempt clubs into paying for upside and reputation. Berge, by contrast, looks like a player being considered for balance, function and cost control.
The midfield chase is only one part of United's summer. TeamTalk states that left-back remains a priority, with Lewis Hall still considered the standout option. Bailey said: "As TEAMtalk revealed, Lewis Hall is top of their list and United remain convinced he'd be open to moving to Old Trafford." The obstacle is clear enough, "The problem is Newcastle have absolutely no desire to sell him, so while Hall remains the dream option, they're continuing to assess alternatives."
In attack, Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye are names to watch. Bailey noted: "Two names I'd keep an eye on are Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye." He added, "United see both Senegal internationals as excellent fits. Sarr was particularly impressive at the World Cup and showed again how effective he can be when used through the middle as well as out wide."
Departures could still shape everything, especially around Marcus Rashford . Bailey said: "Marcus Rashford's future is still one of the biggest issues. He's one of the highest-paid players in Europe and until that's resolved it impacts what United can do." He also pointed to Barcelona 's continuing interest, while cautioning that United "don't want to see another loan deal".
All of which leaves United balancing ambition with restraint. The clearest takeaway from this latest update is that the club are no longer chasing names at any cost. Baleba and Scott may appeal, Camavinga may intrigue, but Berge looks like the option who best fits the current reality. With midfield still the biggest unresolved priority, the next step from INEOS could reveal a lot about how this new structure intends to build.
From a relaxed Manchester United fan's perspective, this report makes a fair bit of sense. Baleba is a brilliant player and you can see why people at the club "absolutely love his game", but paying anything close to £100m for a midfielder when there are other holes in the squad would feel reckless. We have been down that road before. If INEOS are drawing a line on valuation, that is probably healthy.
Berge will not get supporters bouncing in the way a bigger name might, but there is logic to it. He knows the Premier League, he gives the midfield some size and control, and if he really does come in for under £40m then that leaves room to strengthen elsewhere. In truth, United need more than one smart deal, they need a whole summer of them.
Camavinga is the dream mention in all this. If there is even a small opening there, of course fans will talk themselves into it. But the sensible expectation is probably that this ends with a more grounded signing. And that is okay. What most supporters want now is competence, good judgement and players who fit a plan. If Berge is viewed internally as someone who can "do a very good job", that might be exactly the kind of move this squad needs.
