Less than a week from now, the Carolina Panthers have to make their final roster cuts ahead of the regular season—trimming their roster from 90 players down to 53.
At this point, we have a pretty good idea of who's going to make the team and who won't. But one position stands out as being very difficult to project given the high number of options competing for a relatively small number of spots.
That would be the wide receiver position, which looks better now than it has at any time in the post-Steve Smith era. According to Mike Kaye at ESPN , six receivers are going to make the initial 53-man roster.
Here's who he has on the roster going into Week 1:
-
Ja'seem Reed
-
Jimmy Horn Jr.
This scenario leaves out ninth-year veteran David Moore , a favorite of head coach Dave Canales. The 31-year-old, prior to Carolina, worked alongside Canales through their stops in Seattle (2017 to 2020) and Tampa Bay (2023).
Kaye has Moore possibly landing back on the practice squad:
The top trio of McMillan, Coker and Legette was solidified when third-round rookie Chris Brazzell II underwent season-ending knee surgery earlier this month. Reed has flashed regularly during the summer, and Horn has had a nice preseason. Tremayne can play all three wide receiver spots and is among Carolina's top special teams players, so David Moore might need to settle for a practice squad spot.
Many Panthers would probably be thrilled, but surprised, if Moore doesn't make the roster. Though they may want to see John Metchie III , the team's leading receiver this preseason, in the mix.
If we could play general manager, we'd swap in Metchie for Tremayne, who has barely played this month. That, however, is often a sign of a player's spot being secure.
Nonetheless, what matters more is that Horn makes the roster over Moore. His ability as a return specialist and gadget weapon make him far more valuable—no matter how good of a leader and/or practice player Moore might be.
