FOXBOROUGH – Rhamondre Stevenson is used to leading the way.
The veteran running back led the Patriots in rushing in two of the last three seasons. He’s started 36 of the last 38 games played. However, after a nagging toe injury kept him out for three weeks, he watched from the sideline as TreVeyon Henderson took the lead in the Patriots backfield.
The second-round pick has quickly become one of the Patriots ’ most dynamic playmakers. Despite being a competitor, Stevenson couldn’t be happier for his teammate.
“I’m super happy for him,” Stevenson said. “He comes in to work every day, eager to learn. Very respectful person. His faith is high. He’s just a great guy, great teammate. I’m super proud of him. Hopefully, he can keep it going.”
Stevenson started this season as the Patriots starting running back. He and Henderson both split time in the backfield. Early on, the pair led the team in rushing twice each in the first four games. Stevenson’s biggest game came in Week 2 when he led the Patriots in rushing (54 yards) and receiving (88 yards).
Over the first seven weeks, Henderson had double-digit carries once. That changed dramatically after the team’s win against the Cleveland Browns . In that matchup, in which Stevenson led the team in carries, the veteran suffered a toe injury that forced him out of the next three games.
Since then, Henderson has averaged 15 carries per game in the last six weeks. The rookie has also turned into a dynamic weapon. He ran for 148 yards with two touchdowns on Sunday. That was his second 100-yard game over the last five games.
While Stevenson was out, he said Henderson’s performance actually made him feel better.
“It was frustrating, but I’ve got TreVeyon putting the team on his back, and he’s running the ball well. So, it wasn’t that bad,” Stevenson said. “I enjoyed watching him play, but I love playing football. I’m a competitor, so it’s great to be back out there.”
Stevenson returned to the field against Cincinnati , but was still limited by the toe injury. He ran for 5 yards on six carries that game. On Sunday, Stevenson looked healthy, averaging 8.3 yards per carry, running 50 yards on six carries.
“I’m feeling good,” Stevenson said. “I’m ready to play. I’m feeling healthy and ready to help the team out.”
