Robert Kraft has liked what he’s seen from Drake Maye since the Patriots drafted him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
But it’s not the quarterback’s accuracy, league-leading QBR or 31 touchdowns that has caught Kraft’s eye the most.
“The greatest quality of him, in at least my feelings, is his humility,” the Patriots owner told David Andrews and Brian Hoyer on the “Quick Snap” podcast . “And I think that comes from his parents and the family he’s got. Three older brothers are good, so usually the baby in the family’s a little spoiled, but he has a humility that’s genuine. And so it’s like putting family first. It’s putting the team first.”
Kraft really noticed Maye’s humility during his rookie season. Despite a down year for New England and weekly struggles, the quarterback made sure to keep his teammate’s spirits up.
“In his rookie year we had so many tough games,” Kraft said . But after every game, he would go around the locker room to the linemen and try to boost them up, and it was genuine. So we’re really lucky, I think, because some of these young men in that position, especially these social media people, get so caught up with that they forget what the basic fundamentals of how you build family, how you build a business, how you build relationships. ... You can see that with this team. There’s no doubt about that."
The Patriots in 2025 are a much different team than in 2024. Kraft made the decision to fire Jerod Mayo after just one season and hired Mike Vrabel not long after. Josh McDaniels also returned as the offensive coordinator.
The results? A 14-3 record, an AFC East title and an AFC Division game against the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon.
Maye’s leap from Year 1 to Year 2 has put him in the MVP conversation , and it’s clear Kraft is quite fond off the quarterback both on and off the field.
