The Kansas City Royals lost to the Cleveland Guardians 10-2 on Wednesday, dropping the three-game set. Kansas City is 5-7 on the season and is dealing with an injury scare that could have shaken up their rotation. Royals starter Cole Ragans left the game in the first inning after taking a line drive off his thumb, but told reporters that he expects to make his next start.
"Just a little stiff, obviously, wore it directly off the hand. But, you know, should be good to go," Ragans said, per MLB.com's Anne Rogers. "I want to be out there. I felt really good prior to that. Just want to keep going. I know we're in a long stretch of games right here, so just trying to do as much as I can."
The Associated Press reports that he expects to make his next start after he was diagnosed with a thumb contusion.
Ragans is the Royals' ace, even though he had a rough 2025 season. His incredible 2024 campaign, a 3.14 ERA in 32 starts, is the baseline that Kansas City expects from the former Texas Rangers pitcher. His start before this one was spectacular, allowing zero earned runs in six innings against the Twins. But he has earned the loss in each of his three starts so far.
The Royals have not had a normal start to the 2026 season. Their star offensive players, USA's Bobby Witt Jr and Italy's Vinnie Pasquantino , were headliners at the World Baseball Classic. Carter Jensen was the story of baseball for a day after sleeping through an alarm. And Michael Wacha has been one of the best pitchers in baseball to start the season.
The Royals hope that Ragans is fine after this injury scare. They need their ace to get back on his horse this season, and he should have opportunities this April to start that process.
