- Rutgers football: Greg Schiano takeaways from spring practice opener
PISCATAWAY – There's a long way to go before Rutgers football's season opener and plenty of questions to figure out before then.
But as the Scarlet Knights took the field for their first spring practice, there's no question Greg Schiano feels good about his team at this early stage.

"We have to see some things develop, but as far as just talent, yeah, there's more talent in that building today than there's been at any point since we've been back," Schiano said after the March 27 practice. "Just some of it's a little young right now. But I'm excited about it."
That's good news for a program that's looking to bounce back from a 5-7 season. And it's really good news for a team that has multiple spots to fill and starters to replace, starting at quarterback.
Here are some more takeaways from Schiano's first spring comments:
The quarterback battle between Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace

This shouldn't come as a surprise, but Schiano again reiterated that he's not going to force anything when it comes to who Rutgers' starting quarterback will be.

AJ Surace, who's entering his third year with the program and spent last season as QB2 behind Athan Kaliakmanis , will be battling Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan for the job.
"Look, it usually plays itself out," Schiano said. "Will it play itself out in this spring? I don't know. If it doesn't, that's what summer training camp's for. I'm not going to make anything happen. I'm going to let it happen. And it usually will happen if you give it time to happen."
It's going to be a big decision for Schiano and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca.
Either way, having a quarterback with experience in Lonergan is critical, especially given Surace's relative lack of game experience.

Schiano said the coaching staff "turned over every stone" to identify the right quarterback to add to the room.
"And we found the guy we think is the best fit for our program," Schiano said. "And AJ and him are competing, but they're working together. I think we got a great quarterback room, and I know we've got a great quarterback coach in Coach Ciarrocca, so it's all going to work out. Just don't know who yet."

Early read on the new defensive coaching staff
It was an offseason of change for the defense, starting with the hiring of defensive coordinator Travis Johansen.

Johansen then added multiple assistants to his staff.
So far, Schiano's been impressed.
"From the day they got here, it's been a great connection with the kids," Schiano said. "And I really am impressed with the way they're working.
Johansen has a major task ahead of him, trying to turn around a defense that was among the worst in the country last season.
He's taking a deliberate approach to installing the new system.
"We're taking our time," Schiano said. "We're not trying to rush it. We're not trying to, you know, have the defense installed by the middle of spring. It's going to be a five-month approach to opening game and it'll take every second of it and then some, but that's where that's what we're doing and I like it."

Optimism around the offensive line
Building up the offensive line has been a major point of emphasis in recent years, because that's the position group that's toughest to develop in the Big Ten.
It's been an ongoing process, but Schiano is confident the Scarlet Knights are now seeing the results of that work.
The unit, now coached by Jim Turner after the program parted ways with Pat Flaherty, has to replace center Gus Zilinskas, but returns multiple key pieces, including Kobe Asamoah, Tyler Needham and Dantae Chin.
"I'm really excited about the O-line," Schiano said. "I think Coach Turner is doing a great job. I know he is. I think the players have really taken to him. I like the offensive line. I really think that we got a chance to be good up front. And we have more depth than we've ever had. We have some young guys that need to ascend, and I think they're going to."
