College basketball teams aren't supposed to find returning double-digit scorers in late August.
Texas A&M might have just found one without leaving its own campus.
Rylan Griffen appeared to be finished in College Station after exhausting his eligibility last season. Instead, a temporary restraining order granted Thursday has reopened the possibility of something Bucky McMillan couldn't have reasonably built his offseason around … getting his second-leading scorer back.

And Griffen has already made it pretty clear he'd like to take advantage.
According to his petition, Griffen "intends to remain at Texas A&M University for the 2026-27 season" if granted another year of eligibility.
That's not exactly a minor addition for McMillan to potentially stumble into this close to another season.
Griffen started 27 of 32 games during his first season in College Station, averaging 11.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists while helping Texas A&M reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

He also shot a career-best 40.4% from three and finished second on the Aggies in scoring.
A&M spent an entire offseason building its Year 2 roster without expecting any of that production to come back.
Now it might.
There are still a few pretty important steps between "might" and "will."
Texas A&M is "exploring all options," a source with knowledge of the situation told KBTX. Griffen is enrolled in classes at A&M while continuing to work toward graduation, but Thursday's ruling is a temporary restraining order … not a permanent fifth season.
A hearing in the case is scheduled for Sept. 11.

Griffen's argument stems from the NCAA's new age-based eligibility model, which centers eligibility around a continuous five-year period rather than the previous system's seasons-of-competition framework.
Under the NCAA's transition rules, athletes who used their final season of competition during the 2025-26 academic year weren't granted additional eligibility.

Griffen falls into that group.
He spent his first two seasons at Alabama, played his junior year at Kansas and transferred to Texas A&M for his fourth.

Now he's trying to make College Station home for a fifth.
If the court process ultimately allows it, A&M wouldn't be adding another transfer who needs to learn McMillan's system or an unknown player trying to carve out a role.
It would be getting back a starter who already played 26 minutes per game in it.
That's a pretty unusual option to suddenly have sitting on the table in late August.
There are still court dates ahead, and a TRO shouldn't be confused with a permanent resolution.
But an Aggies team preparing for Year 2 under McMillan suddenly has a chance to regain its second-leading scorer from Year 1.
That's a roster problem Texas A&M probably won't mind having.
