While the Buffalo Sabres managed to find the back of the net first during Sunday evening’s Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre thanks to sniper Tage Thompson , it was downhill from there.
The Canadiens scored four unanswered goals on the Sabres courtesy of Alex Newhook , Cole Caufield , Zach Bolduc, and Juraj Slafkovsky before Buffalo stopped the bleeding with a goal from Rasmus Dahlin . However, the Canadiens added another pair of goals in the third period thanks to Kirby Dach and the second of the night from Newhook, winning by a 6-2 final score and taking a two games to one series lead.
Sabres goaltender Alex Lyon , who was making his seventh straight start after replacing Ukko-Pekka Lukkonen in the opening round of the playoffs against the Bruins, was victimized for all six goals and finished with 31 saves on the 36 shots he faced. But for anyone who was hoping that head coach Lindy Ruff would throw him under the bus, they’ll have to wait. Ruff defended Lyon , who made 13 saves alone in the first period.
“He was very good all night,” Ruff said of Lyon via NHL.com. “Nothing about Alex Lyon, this game.”
Meanwhile, the rest of the Sabres are already looking forward to Game 4 after taking it on the chin on Sunday.
“We all know in here that, when we’re at the top of our game and playing as good as we can, we’re a good hockey team, too. … No one’s got their head hung walking out of here. They beat us, you take it like a man and move on to the next one.”
Game 4 is Tuesday evening.
