The Buffalo Sabres needed a win in Game 4 against the Montreal Canadiens to avoid facing elimination. Buffalo fought hard, and it was not an easy game by any means. But with determination, excellent goaltending from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen , and some Tage Thompson luck , the Sabres got the win they needed.
Luukkonen was a force in Game 4. He received the starter’s net after Alex Lyon allowed 12 goals across the first three games of this series. On Tuesday, he stood on his head as he led the Sabres to a big 3-2 win. The Sabres netminder made 28 saves in the victory on Tuesday.
Buffalo scored the first goal of this game thanks to defenseman Mattias Samuelsson . The Buffalo reaguard’s third of the playoffs made it 1-0. But Montreal was not going to let the visitors have all the fun.
Alex Newhook continued his hot streak with a goal on Tuesday night. Then, with only seconds remaining in the first period, the Habs struck again. Cole Caufield scored for the second straight game to give Montreal a 2-1 lead.
In a reversal of Game 3, though, Buffalo held it down for the second period. Thompson eventually tied the game on a weird goal that went in through a deflection off the end boards. In the third period, Zach Benson found the back of the net on the powerplay to give his team the lead.
The Sabres have evened this series with the Canadiens at two games apiece. Now, this series is essentially a best-of-three. And Buffalo has home ice advantage beginning with Game 5 at the KeyBank Center on Thursday night.
