Unfortunately for the Buffalo Sabres , their incredible season that began with one of the most stunning turnarounds in recent NHL memory came to a close on Monday night at the hands of the divisional rival Montreal Canadiens .
The Sabres, who staved off elimination by the Canadiens with a dominating 8-3 win in Montreal in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal, were defeated in overtime of Game 7 in Buffalo thanks to a snapshot from Alex Newhook past the glove of a stunned Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen . That sent Montreal to the Eastern Conference Final against the Carolina Hurricanes .
Meanwhile, there is plenty of work ahead for the Sabres, who have multiple pending restricted and unrestricted free agents. One of their pending restricted free agents is forward Zach Benson , who admitted during Tuesday's season-ending media availability session that he's not given much thought to his impending contract status and that he'll be speaking with his agent soon.
"That's something I haven't even thought about," Benson said via Matthew Fairburn on X. "That's something I'll have to talk to my agent about in the next couple of weeks and go from there. I was just so focused on playing, obviously. I haven't even really thought about it."
Benson, who was selected by the Sabres in the first round (13th overall) in the 2023 NHL Draft, scored 13 goals with 30 assists in 65 games during the regular season for the Sabres, who won their division for the first time since 2007. Benson also scored five goals with four assists during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
