The New Orleans Saints and Las Vegas Raiders have made a Tyree Wilson trade, giving the former No. 7 overall draft pick a change of scenery . The Raiders are sending Wilson and pick 219 to the Saints for pick 150.
“Trade: The #Saints are trading for former #Raiders first-round edge Tyree Wilson , per me and @MikeGarafolo,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport announced. “A new, high-ceiling edge in New Orleans .”
Wilson has been disappointing in Las Vegas , starting just seven games and picking up just 12 sacks in three seasons for the Raiders. While Las Vegas thought they were getting a long-term running mate for Maxx Crosby at the top of the 2023 NFL Draft, it just hasn’t worked out that way.
Coming out of Texas Tech, Wilson has incredible athletic ability and potential, but his lack of production was a red flag. In four seasons, he posted just 17.0 sacks. He also dealt with injuries in college, which have followed him to the pros. For the Raiders, this is addition by subtraction as moving up 69 spots in the draft is a horrible return for a top-10 selection.
For the Saints, the Tyree Wilson trade is a low-risk, high-reward move. Even if they end up cutting Wilson in camp, that may have been the fate of the 150th pick anyway. What they were not getting at 150 is a 6-foot-6, 275-pound uber-athlete who has all the tools to become an elite defensive end in the NFL. While he may never become that player, bringing a player in with Wilson’s pedigree makes a ton of sense for New Orleans.
