The New Orleans Saints received some encouraging injury news Wednesday, as rookie wide receiver Jordyn Tyson and offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. returned to practice on a limited basis. However, neither player is officially back just yet, as the team still has a decision to make regarding their availability.
Head coach Kellen Moore also confirmed that New Orleans opened their 21-day practice windows, giving the Saints three weeks to activate each player from injured reserve.
Opening the practice windows is an important step in their respective recoveries, but it does not guarantee either player will immediately return to action this weekend. The Saints will have to evaluate how both players progress before making a final decision. If they are not activated within the 21-day window, they will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season.
Tyson's potential return is encouraging for a New Orleans offense that could use another playmaker at wide receiver. The rookie has an opportunity to make an immediate impact once he is cleared to play, especially alongside Chris Olave.
Olave has been one of the Saints' primary receiving options, and adding Tyson to the equation could give the offense another dimension. The rookie has spent time watching and studying while sidelined, which could help him get up to speed as he works toward returning to game action. Having two capable receivers on the field together would give New Orleans more flexibility in the passing game and prevent opposing defenses from focusing as heavily on Olave.
Banks' return to practice is equally important for the offensive line. The Saints need to get healthier up front, and having their young tackle work his way back provides another potential boost to the protection in front of the quarterback.
For now, New Orleans will have to be patient. Both players have taken an encouraging step toward returning, but the next three weeks will determine whether they are ready to contribute again.
