The New Orleans Saints took a risk in first round of the 2026 NFL draft. They selected oft injured star Arizona State Sun Devils wide receiver Jordyn Tyson with their first pick.
The move drew scrutiny for the downside, but the Saints saw an upside that could bring a level of playmaking they did not have behind No. 1 wide receiver Chris Olave.
The Saints have not been able to see what Tyson brings to the offense in extended game action, but that opportunity could come soon. Tyson returned to the Saints practice field with an eye toward a return.
ESPN NFL insider Katherine Terrell recorded what the Saints had to say about how Tyson has looked in a Saints uniform. Per Terrell, New Orleans quarterback Tyler Shough had high praise for the talented receiver. Here's some of what Shough had to say about what he could bring to the New Orleans offense.
"He's a dawg. I think he brings this mentality, this elusiveness, this versatility to our offense that it's hard to replace. At the same time, there's a lot of unknown. We haven't had a lot of reps with him. It could be even greater than we could imagine, it could be not a significant role as we may think. And both are extremely OK. We have to do a better job as a whole offense."
Saints head coach Kellen Moore shared what the team has to consider with its decision on when to bring him back.
"You just got to let the medical side take its course, and when these guys become available, we'll continue to build off that plan. But both guys have been working well and we'll just kind of let this week take its course. They're limited today and we'll see how the rest of the week goes."
If he is able to get on the field, the Saints have one of the better young receiver talents in the NFL. Tyson may have been questioned for his injury history, but it's hard to doubt his playing ability. He was clearly one of the best at his position in college football, and it could translate to the pros.
When the Saints return Tyson to the field is still to be seen, but that moment could pay off not only for Tyson but for his team. Look for the young player to break out on the field when he gets his opportunity.
