The New Orleans Saints finally had their first preseason game of the year, and it was a fun one. The defense looked like they were going to make a big play every drive, and although the offense took some time, they also had some great moments. It resulted in a Saints loss, but they had some great performances, and here are three that stood out.
Jayden Price
One of the standout defensive players in training camp has been CB Jayden Price, and although it seems he will make the roster, he still needs a good preseason. No matter how much hype the training camp could bring, the player needs to show it in game time, and Price made that happen today. His zone coverage was great; he made plays on special teams, had a really good pass breakup, and intercepted a pass.
Price may not be able to start right away with Jonas Sanker playing in the slot, but he can be an impact player on special teams and come in when injuries occur.
Michael Heldman
Someone who was not as much of a discussion topic in training camp was EDGE Michael Heldman, but he was a very hyped up UDFA. After having really good production in college, Heldman was a player that many had their eyes on, especially in a pass rush group that could use some high-end potential. Also, he fit the Saints' defensive scheme in that OLB role.
So with his quiet camp, this was the time for Heldman to make a strong impression on the coaching staff, and he did just that. He had two sacks and three tackles for loss in total. Of course, it should be said that Heldman did this against backups, but so would other starters in the NFL. As of now, Heldman is not a starter, so it's still very impressive.
Bub Means
This WR battle is going to be so interesting. At one point, Jalyn Polk was the favorite (until he retired), then Trey Palmer and Kevin Austin Jr. , but now it may be Bub Means. After suffering some major injuries during his first two seasons, Means needed a big preseason because there's a good chance he does not make this roster. But this preseason game may have changed things. Means made big plays and was a consistent pass catcher.
There is still too much time between now and the Saints making a decision for their last WR spot, but Means may have just catapulted himself to the top of the list. I also wanted to note that Palmer also finished the game really well and made some incredible catches.
