- The Saints’ Tyree Wilson Gamble: Why a Low-Risk Trade Could Pay Off Big in New Orleans
The New Orleans Saints didn't use a single 2026 draft pick on a rookie edge rusher, but don't mistake that for complacency. Instead of gambling on Day 3 draft-board flyers, general manager Mickey Loomis pulled off a fascinating, low-risk heist, sending a fifth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders in exchange for Tyree Wilson .
On paper, trading for a guy who largely underwhelmed in Vegas after being taken in the top 10 out of Texas Tech feels like a classic "bust retrieval" project. But in reality, this is a brilliant calculated risk for a Saints defense that excels at resurrecting stalled careers.

"Our personnel staff did a great job of having a vision for the acquisition, and that it was possible," Staley said. "All of us had done a lot of work on him coming out from various places, and I think it came together the right way, both coaches and personnel. Kellen was familiar with him playing against him in other spots."
New Scenery, New Sanctuary
At 6-foot-5 and 263 pounds, Wilson has the unteachable, elite physical traits that defensive coaches drool over. He just needed out of the toxic cycle of a franchise that couldn't figure out how to maximize his unique frame. He needs a change of scenery—and the Crescent City has recently become the ultimate sanctuary for former first-round edge rushers looking for a spark, much like Chase Young .
The secret weapon in this trade isn't just Wilson's raw talent. It's the brain trust waiting for him in New Orleans. Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, head coach Kellen Moore, and the personnel staff didn't just watch his Raiders tape and throw a dart at the board. They had deep, extensive pre-draft evaluations of Wilson when he entered the league. They know exactly what makes him tick, where his technique broke down in Las Vegas, and how his specific power-rush skill set fits into the Saints' aggressive front.

"He's got such a huge future in front of him and a fresh start" Staley said. "Hopefully we can just help him get there, because he's a really good kid, he works really hard. He's been great to coach so far."
Looking Ahead
By trading a mere fifth-rounder, the Saints aren't asking Wilson to be a franchise savior on day one. They are giving a hyper-talented athlete the structure, coaching familiarity, and veteran support he desperately lacked out west. If Staley and Moore can unlock even 80% of the potential that made Wilson a top-10 pick, this fifth-round swap won't just be a smart depth move, but rather it'll be the steal of the offseason.
