A halftime moment at the Frost Bank Center turned into a milestone for a volunteer scholarship fund.
On Jan. 19, 2026, San Antonio Spurs forward Harrison Barnes and his wife, Brittany, surprised the San Antonio MLK Commission with a $50,000 donation . The gift supports the commission's scholarship program and stands as the largest contribution in the fund's history.
The couple presented the check during the Spurs' Martin Luther King Jr. Day game against Utah. For the commission, the timing brought more than a generous gesture. Its scholarship program was working toward a $100,000 fundraising goal for 2026, which the city planned to match with another $100,000.
The Barnes family's donation covered half of that target. Commission scholarship chair Tyrone Darden said the contribution helped the volunteer organization move closer to its goal.
Barnes said giving back to the communities where he has played has been important to his family since he entered the NBA. After joining San Antonio, he and Brittany wanted to support organizations helping young people and expanding opportunity.

The donation also added to a growing record of community support. In 2025, the couple gave $250,000 to AlamoPROMISE, a tuition-free program helping eligible students in Bexar County pursue higher education. The program helps seniors overcome financial barriers to college attendance. The gift benefited students at St. Philip's College, a historically Black college and Hispanic-serving institution.
Their local efforts have included helping families with groceries and gift cards during the holidays, as well as supporting basketball court renovation projects.
As Pounding The Rock noted , Barnes has continued to make an impact beyond the court since arriving in San Antonio.
For the MLK Commission, the record gift helps support students pursuing education. For Barnes and his wife, it reflects a commitment to giving back to a city that welcomed them.
