Former NFL star Cam Newton made accusations of being scammed by former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall .
On Monday's episode of the "4th & 1" podcast, the former Carolina Panthers quarterback revealed the story behind his accusations. According to Newton, the incident took place back when the Pro Bowl games were played in Hawaii.
"When I went out there to Waikiki, Honolulu, it was still some finessing jug and some scamming going on," Newton said. "An old story goes like this. Brandon Marshall. Boy, I think I was there two days earlier before my family got in. So I just go downstairs, say, 'Let me grab something to eat.' To my surprise, I see Brandon Marshall.
"He was a Pro Bowler as well too. We're eating, just talking, just kicking it, whatever. We were down there for about 45 minutes to an hour. I'm about to leave. Whatever. Cool. He stayed. Fast forward to after the Pro Bowl game, I see a fee of tens of thousands of dollars that was up under my room. I ain't get this much room service. How in the world did that happen?
"Well, as a young player, when they bring you your receipt, everybody's done been to a hotel or a resort or somewhere where it has, do you want to pay cash, card, or you want to charge it to the room? And my dumb behind say I want to charge it to the room in front of a finesser, a jugger and a scammer. I said, dang, he got me. And I don't think it was just him. It was numerous folks."
Marshall spent 13 seasons playing in the NFL. The Denver Broncos drafted him with the No. 119 pick in 2006. In 2018, he played seven games for the Seattle Seahawks before being released. Marshall then signed with the New Orleans Saints in November but was released in December without making an appearance for the team.
Looking at Cam Newton's NFL career
After an impressive 2010 campaign at Auburn, where he won the Heisman Trophy, Cam Newton was drafted by the Carolina Panthers with the No. 1 pick in 2011. He excelled during his debut campaign in the league and was honored as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. Newton was also named the league MVP during the 2015 season when he led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 as NFC champions.
However, the quarterback suffered multiple injuries over the next few years. He spent the 2020 campaign with the Patriots before returning to the Panthers on a one-year deal in 2021. In 11 seasons, he recorded 32,382 passing yards and 194 TD passes.
