- SDSU football: Jackrabbits rout Eastern Illinois
Sep. 26—BROOKINGS — South Dakota State shook off a groggy first half to easily coast past Eastern Illinois 42-7 in front of 18,264 fans Saturday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
Josh Holst made his first start for the Jackrabbits at quarterback in place of the injured Chase Mason and completed 11-of-22 throws for 176 yards but the SDSU running game once again dominated. SDSU churned up 408 rushing yards as SDSU outgained the Panthers 597-196.
The Jacks led just 14-7 at halftime, as they failed to convert a pair of 4th downs in EIU territory and saw a 41-yard Tristan Alvano field goal attempt hit off the left upright.
But the Jacks wasted no time putting any thoughts of an upset to bed after the break, scoring on each of their first two offensive plays in the third quarter — a 49-yard James Basinger touchdown run and a 61-yarder by Corey Blair. Basinger also had a 39-yard scoring run while Josiah Johnson had touchdown runs of 18 and 55 yards.
Holst found Ben Brooks on a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson finished with 121 yards and Basinger 116 while Blair had 80.
