- SDSU football: Jackrabbits throttle New Haven
Sep. 12—BROOKINGS — The degree of difficulty was lowered significantly for South Dakota State on Saturday, and they responded accordingly.
One week after a hard-fought loss to a Big Ten team the Jackrabbits spanked New Haven 57-14 in front of 19,031 fans at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, shaking off a slow start to entertain the Beef Bowl crowd on a picture-perfect late summer night.
Leading just 3-0 after a sluggish first quarter the Jacks (2-1) exploded for 33 points in the second quarter and 14 more in the third as they opened up the passing game which knocked loose the ground attack.
Chase Mason threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns and also ran in a score in just over two quarters of action while the Jackrabbit running back stable combined for 242 yards on the ground. James Basinger had two rushing touchdowns and Greyton Gannon had a pair of touchdown catches. Ramon McKinney also had a rushing touchdown and Coleman Kuntz caught a touchdown pass.
SDSU finished with 256 yards rushing and 256 yards passing.
The SDSU defense carried a shutout into the fourth before the Chargers (1-2) put together a pair of scoring drives against the Jacks' reserves.
SDSU will kick off conference play next Saturday when they host Youngstown State.
