- SDSU surges early, holds on late to beat USD
Oct. 31—BROOKINGS — South Dakota State rolled early and held on late to win the latest chapter of the in-state rivalry on Saturday, defeating the USD Coyotes 31-21 in front of 18,902 Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium fans.
The Jacks led 21-0 at halftime, at one point outgaining the Coyotes 265-2, and they pushed the lead to 28-0 on a Josiah Johnson touchdown run in the third quarter.
But USD hung around, getting on the board early in the fourth on an Austyn Modrzewski to Brayden White touchdown pass, then making it 28-14 on a 59-yard catch-and-run from Modrzewski to Bryce Cohoon.
The Yotes then got a stop with just over four minutes to play and cashed it in on a Modrzweski to Chris Herrin touchdown pass on a reverse flea-flicker to make it 28-21.
The Coyotes needed a stop to get the ball back and didn't get it, as SDSU converted a 3rd and short on a Chase Mason rush, then saw Johnson race 44 yards on the next play, setting up a 34-yard Tristan Alvano field goal that put it away.
Mason threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns, while Modrzewski threw for 233 yards and three scores. Johnson rushed for 126 yards for SDSU while James Basinger added 84 rushing yards and a score.
SDSU (7-2, 4-1) will visit Northern Iowa next week.
USD (7-3, 4-2) is on a bye next week.
