The Seattle Seahawks announced running backs coach Kennedy Polamolu is taking a leave of absence for personal reasons.
This was Polamolu's 34th season coaching between the NFL and collegiate levels, and 15th in the NFL alone.
Justin Outten and Michael Byrne will take over his duties for the time being.
Outten has 10 years of NFL coaching experience, notably as the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator in 2022. He joined the Seahawks in February as run game coordinator. He also served as running backs coach and run game coordinator with the Tennessee Titans in 2023, inspiring confidence he can juggle both responsibilities at once.
Byrne has just two years of NFL experience, both as an offensive assistant for Klint Kubiak. He followed Kubiak from the New Orleans Saints to Seattle this season. He does, however, have an extensive coaching background at all three NCAA divisions. He's been a running backs coach before at West Texas A&M University, and an assistant running backs coach at Texas A&M University (not to be confused with each other). He's clearly one of Kubiak's "guys" and hopefully helps the running backs fit within the offense in his biggest opportunity yet.
Head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed before practice that Polamolu won't be returning this season.
We at Seahawks Wire wish Polamolu the best in his personal life and thank him for all of the work he's put into this team as running backs coach over the last two seasons. We also wish him success if and when he returns to coaching, whether it be in Seattle or elsewhere. We also wish Outten and Byrne well as they step up into the role and hope they take advantage of the opportunity in spades.
