The Seattle Seahawks made an aggressive move to improve their offensive line when they acquired Quenton Nelson from Indianapolis. The former All-Pro guard was supposed to help stabilize an offense struggling to create consistent opportunities.

But Monday's 34-17 loss to Chicago demonstrated that Seattle's problems extend beyond one position.
The Seahawks managed only 81 rushing yards, converted just one of 11 third downs and struggled to sustain drives against a Bears defense strengthened by the arrival of Jeffery Simmons. The result dropped Seattle to 4-4.
Nelson cannot fix every problem
Seattle acquired Nelson for draft picks, including a third-round selection in 2027 and a fifth-rounder in 2028. The move reflected the organization's desire to improve immediately while defending its Super Bowl championship.
Nelson brings considerable experience and a reputation as one of the NFL's strongest interior blockers. But offensive line performance depends on coordination across multiple positions.

The Seahawks struggled to establish the running game against Chicago, even with injured running backs returning to the lineup.
Seattle finished with 81 yards on the ground. That made the offense increasingly dependent on Sam Darnold.
Darnold faced difficult situations
Darnold completed 17 of 34 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 43-yard touchdown during the first half.
Later, he found Cooper Kupp for a touchdown that helped Seattle reduce Chicago's lead to three points.
But the Seahawks could not sustain their momentum. Chicago responded with another touchdown, and Darnold's fourth-quarter interception helped set up Swift's final score.

Seattle also failed to capitalize on several scoring opportunities, including a blocked field goal.

Seattle's championship defense is under pressure
The Seahawks have now lost three of their last four games. That is a concerning stretch for a team trying to defend a Super Bowl title.
The offensive line trade demonstrates that Seattle's front office recognizes the need for improvement. But the Bears game showed that the Seahawks also need better execution on third down, more consistent rushing production and fewer costly mistakes.

Nelson can help address some of those issues. He cannot solve them all.
Seattle hosts Arizona next Sunday, providing an opportunity to regain momentum. The Seahawks remain capable of competing in the NFC, but their margin for error is shrinking. The next several games will determine whether the Nelson acquisition becomes part of a successful turnaround or an expensive response to a much larger problem.
