Right after winning the Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks saw Riq Woolen leave in free agency but signed Josh Jobe to a new deal. However, they seemed to be far from satisfied with their seemingly stacked cornerback room.
General manager John Schneider used four of the team's eight draft picks on defensive backs, including three on cornerbacks. They kept Michael Dansby and Andre Fuller on the practice squad and signed Julian Neal to the 53-man roster.
Then, they signed both Terrion Arnold and Trevon Diggs, adding even more bodies to that room. Clearly, they're still not entirely sold on their CB2, which is why they should explore a trade for Kansas City Chiefs veteran Kristian Fulton.
The Chiefs signed Fulton to a two-year deal last offseason, but he missed nearly half of his first campaign with an injury. Even so, he gave them above-average play when he was healthy enough to suit up.
Given that he's on an expiring deal and the Chiefs found a starting-caliber guy in Nohl Williams, plus Mansoor Delane's addition, he's now the odd man out. He's played only when their first-round pick cornerback has sat with an injury.
Even in that role, Fulton has looked great for Steve Spagnuolo's defense. He's holding quarterbacks to a 42.9 percent completion percentage and a 10.7 passer rating (yes, that's not a typo!), giving up just three receptions for 13 yards. He also has one pass breakup and one interception in just three games (one start).
The Seahawks wouldn't even be on the hook for a ton of money by trading for Fulton. Whatever's left of his base salary of $9.75 million will be laughable by the time the November 10 trade deadline comes, assuming he even makes it that far in Missouri.
The Chiefs don't need to trade him because he's a serviceable veteran, and Delane has looked brittle early on in his career. That said, they clearly think they don't have room for him when they're at full strength, and they might be better off with him as a trade chip. They also have L'Jarius Sneed as a potential option on the boundary in case of an injury.
Josh Jobe hasn't looked the part this season. Nehemiah Pritchett and Devon Witherspoon both look like locks to play heavy snaps, but that third spot might still be up for grabs, and Fulton could be a cheap, high-upside, plug-and-play guy.
The Seahawks' secondary is pretty stacked, but this team wouldn't have signed Arnold and Diggs if they didn't think they could do better. As for Fulton, he'd gladly welcome a move to another Super Bowl contender where he can actually play for a change.
