Denver Broncos general manager George Paton is entering the final year of his contract , and he's been mentioned as a potential candidate for the GM opening with the Minnesota Vikings .
While speaking at the NFL combine earlier this week, Broncos head coach Sean Payton was asked if he will advocate for Paton to get a contract extension.
"I have already," Payton said. "It's overdue. I say that respectfully to the process, but he and I have a great working relationship. So my job wouldn't be as fun or as exciting if he wasn't a part of it. That should be something that gets handled quickly."
Greg Penner, the team's majority owner and CEO, has said he would like to have Paton and Payton with the club " long-term ," but no deal has been struck yet. Payton has two years remaining on his contract.
When asked about Payton's endorsement and not having an extension yet, Paton said he appreciated the coach's support, but he brushed off the notion that a deal is overdue.
"[W]e're just so busy this time of year," Paton said. "The season went longer, which is cool, but the offseason gets condensed. We've been rolling. That is really cool, but it will happen when it happens. I'm not too worried about it. We have a lot going on this offseason. We have a busy offseason."
NFL free agency will begin next month , followed by the draft in April. Those are the two big tasks up next on Denver's offseason calendar, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Paton get an extension once the offseason slows down.
