The international break gives us time to take a closer look at what happened in the opening rounds of Serie A: after seeing the Flop 5 goalkeepers according to the data , today we look at the Top 5.
Between shots saved, miracles, and less-than-perfect defenses forcing goalkeepers into overtime: here are the 5 best goalkeepers according to the stats.
The value we use is expressed with the formula: xGOT from a given position + shot power + where the save is made - goals conceded.
This way, you can calculate the actual danger of every shot saved, then subtract the goals conceded by the goalkeeper himself. So we get the actual goals prevented by a goalkeeper. The abbreviation is written like this: PsxG-GA (Goals Against).
Lazio's start has not only stood out for attacking output and intensity, because the role of Christos Mandashas also been crucial: 6.45 xGOT facedand only 3 goals conceded, meaning 3.45 goals saved.
This stat is boosted significantly by the penalty he saved against Venezia and his excellent performance on opening day against Bologna, a match in which he made 4 saves without conceding.
The real revelation of the season is Frosinone along with many of its players, first and foremost Lorenzo Palmisani: 2.96 goals preventedthanks to the 6.96 xGOT facedand just 4 goals conceded.
After the first three matches without any noteworthy over-performance , the 2004-born goalkeeper saved 0.5 goals against Genoa and above all prevented 2.55 goals against Como. His 2nd place in this ranking comes entirely from those two matches.
Right behind him is Elia Caprile, who does a very good job of protecting an organized defense like Cagliari's: a rather deep unit that leaves little space. 2.61 goals preventedfrom 4.61 xGOT facedand 2 goals conceded.
It is worth noting that Caprile has faced 21 shots and in particular made saves worth 0.91 xGOT against Udinese on Kabasele and 0.85 xGOT against Inter on Pio Esposito.
Atalanta's goalkeeper has prevented 2.09 goals.
Half of his tally comes from 1.13 xGOT saved against Bologna. Another excellent display came against Roma despite the 2 goals conceded: a match in which Carnesecchi still managed to post an over-performance.
Data that is practically identical for Maignanand Okoye. Milan's goalkeeper has faced 5.81 xGOT and conceded 4 goals:the difference is 1.81 goals saved; in particular, the two brilliant saves on Conceicao against Juve and one against Lecce on Fatah stand out.
A very different case is that of Okoye: as many as 34 shots faced and 11 goals conceded, but the xGOT faced is 12.8.In short, Udinese's start to the season defensively could have been even worse.
