Being a professional athlete is no easy task. The grueling work ethic and demand on the body that is required to succeed in sports isn't joyful, to say the least. Despite all the work one puts in, success still won't be guaranteed, as multiple factors need to align to even have a chance of reaching the top.
With that, the off-court scenery isn't much prettier for athletes, as constant media attention and microscopic analysis of players' behavior are constantly under observation. Nevertheless, while many are willing to go through that path, only a select few make it out.
Still, for those who do make it, the benefits are astronomical in a materialistic sense. But in all of the glamour, athletes are also human and struggle with various things that make their lives miserable, as well as those around them, such as their partners.
Most notably, athletes, including NBA players, are known for notorious cheating scandals. While some are willing to take the beating for their partner's infidelity, there still lies a pain deep inside. Truth is, among all the things an athlete can give to their better half, sometimes the most important of them all is missing as they are constantly battling many vices.
Bryant's wife was a victim of this problem
When you are a player with a reputation and fame level like Kobe Bryant , those problems skyrocket even more. While Mamba was known as a man with a loving family, he couldn't escape the inevitable accusations almost every world-class athlete experiences: rape allegations.
In 2003, Bryant was accused of felony sexual assault by a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado. While Kobe admitted to the sexual act, he emphasized it was consensual. Still, the damage had already been done, not only to his reputation, but to his wife, Vanessa , who had just delivered their first-born daughter, Natalia, not long before the incident.
In all of Bryant's glory and fame, it's safe to say Vanessa's life as his wife wasn't easy. Due to his public persona, she lived every day in fear that their relationship might crumble due to the women who targeted her husband. But on that day, her world turned upside-down after what Kobe had done.
"I remember at one point she had this sort of identity crisis," said a cousin of Vanessa . "She told me she was starting not to know who she was anymore, other than the wife of Kobe Bryant."
Vanessa eventually forgave Kobe
In the aftermath of Kobe's incident, Vanessa managed to swallow his infidelity and forgive him, not filing for divorce, and remaining by his side until his tragic death in 2020.
However, the period of coming to terms with the results of that scandal was anything but pretty. During Kobe's highly publicized press conference, Vanessa stood by his side as he apologized. After the civil suit was settled outside of the court, Bean gave her an eight-carat purple diamond ring.
Despite moving past his 2003 incident, Vanessa would ultimately file for divorce in 2011, claiming irreconcilable differences after multiple infidelities from Bryant. But by 2013, the two would reconcile after Kobe pushed for the couple to get back together, calling off their divorce.
While Kobe's situation was unique in many ways, it serves as another reminder that being married to a professional athlete comes with its own set of challenges, despite all the benefits that often come with the lifestyle.
