The Mustangs have placed a premium on retaining and aquiring proven contributors during an era defined by roster movement. Lang, a former Missouri transfer, brings experience and familiarity to a defense seeking continuity after recent departures along the defensive front.
Lang has quietly established himself as a reliable presence throughout his college career. Across his time at Missouri and SMU , he has recorded 37 tackles, four tackles for loss and one fumble recovery. During the 2025 campaign, he appeared in all 13 games, totaling 24 tackles, one tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery while providing depth and versatility.
On3Sports' Pete Nakos shared the news Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, after speaking with Lang's representative about the agreement keeping the pass rusher in Dallas for the 2026 season while giving the Mustangs another retained veteran as offseason roster decisions pile up.
"SMU has signed EDGE Jahkai Lang to a contract extension ahead of the 2026 season, his rep @noahreisenfeld1 tells @On3.

The extension also reflects a broader strategy centered on roster retention. Programs across the country continue battling transfer portal uncertainty, making experienced defenders increasingly valuable. By retaining Lang, the Mustangs preserve continuity within their defensive system while reinforcing a position group expected to matter in 2026.
This is relevant for a program trying to keep its defensive identity intact. The 21-year-old defensive end does not need to carry the entire front to make an impact, but his experience gives the Mustangs football program another trusted option as the staff sorts through roles before the season.

Ultimately, SMU gains more than statistics through the agreement. The move sends a message about program stability, player investment, and long-term planning.
